Washington puts pressure on the EU to speed up trade negotiations, which began last month after a meeting of President of the United States Donald trump and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, two German, and one American official said.

Said Emily Haber, German Ambassador to the U.S. told reporters a working group formed after the trump-Juncker meeting was held for the first time this week, and American officials were pressing “for very quick results”.

She said EU officials need a clear mandate to exit the current “analytical study” and the deal needs to be reached before the European Parliament election in may 2019.

“The Americans are really relevant for very quick results,” Ms. Haber said at the event to unveil plans for more than 1,000 events in the U.S. next year, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

“As far as the timing goes, I would like to note that next year’s elections to the European Parliament, and agreement should be reached in a timely manner before these elections,” she said.

US official confirmed that Washington was asking for negotiations to be put on “much faster timeline,” but gave no specific dates.

The European Commission representative confirmed that a meeting of the EU-us working group was held this week, but gave no details.

Mr. trump agreed in the meeting with Mr Juncker and to refrain from imposing threatened tariffs of cars on European firms, while the two sides have begun talks on reducing tariffs on steel, aluminum and other products. What a surprise agreement weakened the threat of a transatlantic trade war. (Reuters)
