Commercial broadcaster TV3 has strongly objected to plans of RTE to extend its television services, arguing that the company needs to solve their current losses to add new services.

Rté made a formal representation of services in the communications Department on June 25, with the Department seeking parties in recent weeks.

In the framework of the RTE for a new five-year strategy offers new services, including RTE 2 +1 channel, which airs on the main channel an hour when the extension of RTE 1 +1 station, which currently airs after 7 PM every day.

TV3 – which will soon be renamed the virgin – strongly objecting to the plan.

Press Secretary of the group of tv3 said: “TV3 has clearly stated his position in the Department in their consultations.

“We have consistently advocated a long RTE inefficiencies and successive deficits should be considered in anticipation of New financing or approval of new services.

“As a priority, the rte needs to be called to account for their existing base of value and service that they are already working at a loss, before taking on additional commitments.”

Press Secretary rte said he was seeking permission of Ministers to accept the new services. Broadcasting service of Ireland (Bai) will assess the impact, he added.

Rté recorded a loss in the amount of slightly less than 20 million euros in 2016 and a loss of $ 6.4 m in 2017, with the General Director Di Forbes acknowledged that the losses were expected again this year. During the three years, RTE had a total income of around 1 billion euros in commercial income and licence fee income.

The World Cup gave RTE a considerable increase in audience, but industry sources said that commercial impacts – a measure of the industry on the number of ads seen by consumers, showed a slight increase on television. Some critics in the industry told the “Sunday independent” that they think RTE could do more commercial benefits from this event, as some of the commercials were not filled to capacity.

However, a spokesman for rte said: “RTE’s audience of the world Cup was exceptional. Rté significantly outperformed the market in June, selling the world Cup at an increased rate, and as a special. As such, only advertisers who have bought packages or spots would participate in these gaps, i.e. interruptions were not all filled to capacity”.
