The environment is the most serious long-term problem facing the dairy industry, Conor Ryan Arrabawn CEO warned.

Said Mr. Ryan, water quality is one of the main areas of the dairy industry in the future, and he warned that sustainability and the environment should be a priority in the sector, if further expansion of production is not hindered.

“If we want to avoid the situation, which was in Holland, where today they need to reduce their number of cows to 160,000, we have to be very proactive and responsible for issues of water quality,” said Mr. Ryan.

“It’s about being aware of our responsibility. It is not only in the Netherlands, New Zealand, the world’s largest milk producers in the country, has faced some difficulties in this area and they pay for that today,” CEO Arrabawn said.

“My advice is that the day does not prioritize the environment. You have to respect it and to avoid a situation where he will come back to bite you.”

A new interdepartmental Advisory program that is designed to solve the problems of the environment and sustainable development of dairy farms is in the process of formation. The initiative involves all dairies, the Committee, local authorities and EPA. Under the program, 30 consultants were hired by the Committee and dairies to work directly with farmers to improve the environmental and ecological standards. Ten advisers will be financed by processors through the umbrella body, the dairy industry of Ireland (HAI), and 20 provided by the Committee and local authorities.

The scheme is initially to focus on issues of water quality and soil fertility in the farms, to identify areas where progress can be achieved through reasonable management practices.

Conor Mulvihill HAI said that the approach to industry “Advisory higher than regulation” to achieve results.

“This does not mean that we have a huge problem in water and soil because we actually have a great story, with EPA figures showing that we are nearing the top in terms of quality of water and soil.

“But we believe that there are still some places to pass approach, quality of water and soil on farms and how the scheme will be all.”

Meanwhile, more than 2 million Euro a day is still spent on dairy farmers to ease drought conditions in the South and East of the country, ICMSA estimates.

Though the rain has finally fallen in most affected areas of the Southeast, President Pat McCormack ICMSA has warned that drought conditions continues to pose serious problems for the suppliers of milk.
