Helicopters of the Swiss army began airlifting water on Tuesday to thousands of hungry cows that suffer during drought and the heatwave that struck most of Europe.

Large red plastic containers hung from the bottom of the super Puma was carrying water to the farms in the Jura mountains and the Alpine foothills.

About 40 000 cows graze in the summer on Alpine pastures in the Canton of Vaud (state), Western Switzerland, and everyone has up to 150 liters (40 gallons) of water a day, authorities said.

Two large pools were filled with water, to let farmers of land with good road access to fill tanker trucks, they said.

Dozens of farmers called for a special “hot line” with assistance from helicopters with emergency operation was announced last Friday.

“I rented this pasture for 13 years. We have to transport water sometimes, but not so much,” Gregoire Martin, who works on the farm with 68 cows and 90 head of young cattle in Le Culand pasture in Rossiniere, told Reuters TV.

“We have already used army helicopter two years ago, but in the long run we can’t go on this way,” he said.

Switzerland will reduce import tariffs on feed livestock and offer interest-free loans to help farmers deal with the drought, the Federal government said Monday, amid the heat that kills the fish in the Rhine.
