The main Supermac’s Pat McDonagh admitted that he agreed to compensate local residents who sent letters in support of the application for the planning of new service stations.

Fast-food franchise introduced the plans for the development of the motorway in Skehanagh on the M18 in area of Ennis, County Clare.

However, Mr McDonagh said that the company was “horrified” when it was revealed that the number of letters sent in County Clare Council was not aimed at those whose names were on them.

In one case, a person died 15 years ago.

Speaking to RTE’s ‘drivetime’, the Supermac’s boss said: “We are equally horrified, shocked and hurt that innocent, decent people, their names were used in this application without our permission or without their permission.”

Separately, Mr. McDonagh said that the company offered the support of a number of local residents who had planned on making individual submissions.

“So, it seems that the one who organized the petition realized that there was a charge of EUR 20 for each note,” said he.

The company was contacted and asked if he would agree to a refund of those payments. “Believing that the material was completely legitimate,” he said, the company has agreed to reimburse the costs.

However, he said that no money had been returned to date.

The decision to use planning needs to be done at some point in September.
