North cork farmer and member of the European Parliament hoped, Jason Fitzgerald said he is leaving agriculture in January and selling him the 73 cow dairy herd, he says that agriculture on land means that he will never be able to farm the way he wants.

Jason, who is the founder of the Irish farmers with designated land group and teaches Economics at UCC, and also aligns the work with Munster AI FarmIreland said he plans to sell his dairy herd he raises on a rented farm in kanturk in January.

“In 2009 I lost my job in construction and began working with Munster AI, but I always wanted to go into dairy farming, and in 2011 I shot my first farm in Kilbrin with hope for the opportunity to sell the land in my home place in Ballydesmond and then buy a farm in Kilbrin but it doesn’t work,” he said.

“ I can’t sell the land in Ballydesmond because the place it is worthless. Farmers do not want to buy that land.

“I am now renting a farm in Kilbrin but I plan to sell their cows next year because it’s too complicated. Renting will never give me the reward I want from agriculture and agriculture in Ballydesmond means that I will never be able to farm the way I want. I have three daughters to think about and had to face reality.”

Mr Fitzgerald said that the earnings volatility of milk and the harsh weather conditions seen in the past year was another factor why he is planning to leave the sector.

“I never want to see spring like last spring again. It was a dark time for farmers. On top of the weather, I received a master’s degree in Economics in UCC. I was milking cows morning and night and working in münster. AI and then I studied until 2 in the morning and again at six,” he said.

Mr Fitzgerald is looking for a candidate to work as an MEP for Fianna the file and says that if he were successful, he would campaign for the scheme of income volatility should be introduced to help farmers.

“The scheme is the volatility of the income must be realized. The farmers need it, because they can’t just hold on to what is thrown at them. Anytime there is crisis, they have to go to work for the government, when there should already be tools that they can rely on.

“Leaving the UK is on the horizon and the needs of the cattle in his strong to face it, but at the moment this is the weakest were for ten years. “

Mr Fitzgerald added that minimum prices for the culling of the cows should be put in place to help farmers who are “on their knees”.

“All the victims, but there is a cohort of farmers who are absolutely on my knees. Plants for their prices and the markets have followed suit. Farmers usually sell empty cows at this time of year and they can’t do that, because the fundamentals of supply and demand does not exist,” he said.

“The minimum price for cull cows € 3 per kg must be entered for culling cows until next spring, because at this moment vulnerable farmers played.”

If he was elected to the EU Parliament, Mr. Fitzgerald said he would give voice to Irish farmers with designated Land group, who are campaigning on the plastic payment € 350/ha up to be issued on an annual basis.
