The plant was launched to fill supply contracts related to the Muslim festival of EID al-Adha, which begins on August 21.

The impact on trade seen yesterday, the factory quotes for lambs and cull ewes held steady for the second week in a row.

Kildare cooling are top of the table for the lamb at €5.00+10C/kg QA, which I’m told it’s for today (Tuesday) only.

Further Moyvalley all-in €5.00/kg; they follow Kepak Athleague €4.95+5C/kg OK. Two ICM plants at €490+10ckg, Ballyhaunis dawn just overreacting €4.90 kg.

On cull ewe stand, Kildare are leaders with their offer of €2.70+bonus 10 cents/kg, then two icms at €2.70/kg, with dawn and Kepak continuing €2.60/kg.

While the number of sales yards were closed yesterday due to Bank holidays, Jim Bush of new Ross, reported that “factory buyers were very interested” when he came to the factory weight of lamb when it is sold, prices are on top of the €112/HD.

John Brooks xxx doubt that the decimation of the factory price of cattle, caused by the dairy industry dumping culling of the cows to the factories will be repeated – in a roundabout way – in the sector of sheep.

The reason is that the introduction by the government in the amount of €155/payment ha for the tillage sector to grow fodder this fall for his dairy farm neighbors could see a lot of tillage men to abandon tradition to buy in stores for autumn/winter grazing.

John Fagan: ID-tagging is useless without benefit to farmers

When I headed in may to Spain for the break, I had no idea what I’m going to take the weather back with me.

This is an interesting point. A lot of store bought sheep all along the West coast counties on tillage farmers in the East and Midlands for the winter fattening.

Another issue raised by a number of people I talked to had a slow uptake in the market ewe hogget.

The wait from the factory is that the numbers will continue, but this year, more lambs to market that never finished than usual, and that affects their ability to find a home for it. This is a direct consequence of the hot weather, and lambs do not finish. A similar situation exists in the UK, where AHDB (Agriculture and horticulture development) recently reported that lamb prices fell below the five-year average in quality before reaching market specification and the resulting knock-on effect for manufacturers prices.

In AHDB also reported that the UK lamb crop this year is about one million head, which should be good news for Irish industry.
