The recent rain starts to bring a little more hope on the sector of the sheep with the lamb, and the prices stabilized and quotes €5.00-€5.15 to the proposal, partly because of strong demand associated with the Muslim holiday of EID.

Store shopping has not yet established itself in the West and drought’s no doubt to blame, with the supply of grass tightly throughout the country.

Many farms in the West, which tend to have a lot of lambs sold in stores at this stage they have on earth.

It will soon be decision time on whether to wait for the trade shop to pick up or to finish lambs on farms.

With limited supplies of grass, perhaps with the help of food to complement the lambs is the next best option.

It is important when choosing a diet for fattening lambs, stick to it. Chopping and changing the diet can cause the disorder in animals and prevents the lambs from thriving.

I build them up gradually, starting with a small amount of food (200 g/about head). High diet of porridge made from barley, corn, etc. work very well for me.

We sold the first batch of 30 mule weather lambs on 1 Aug.

These lambs did not receive food. They were grazing on the grass and Typhon about two and a half weeks after weaning.

They were the strongest of the lambs and I was very pleased with how the lambs were killed.

They averaged 19.9 kg capacity and fractionated Y2,Y3 and Y4 one, except for one P3 lamb class. I attribute a good sort for choosing the type of Lanark Blackface ewes with a good conformation, and also to choose more healthy Bluefaced leicester rams.

Typhon was completely grazed after these lambs were sold and a bag of nitrogen was spread on the field. It’s now rested for a few weeks to allow regrowth.

I chose strong weather lambs and group them together for feeding. Now they are fed food and will go to Typhon as soon as he recovers. So far so good for Typhon. I’d have to grow a few acres of Typhon, to be able to finish all my lambs from him. This is something I could come back next year.

It is also time to start preparing ewes for breeding. In the Bluefaced leicester ewes will be the first to go to the RAM with the goal of lambing at the end of February.

These ewes received mineral supplements, wormer and have been displaced in the Quality of grazing in the build up to the pairing period.

Replacement ewe hoggets on the farm were also vaccinated with Enzo wax as precautionary measures against enzootic abortion. It was built as part of the plan, the herd health, to prevent disease.

We vaccinated all incoming hoggets replacement in the last few years. Vaccine is required at least one month of pre-selection. It is not effective after the ewes go in lamb.

Shows

At the time of writing, we were preparing Bluefaced Leicesters and mules for the Tullamore show. This is the last show, we will attend the upcoming sales of breeding.

These will Mayo the mule Greyface sale in ballinrobe, a two-day event on August 24-25.

On Friday, the sale will be held ewe hoggets and ewe lambs on Saturday. As always it is a busy time of year on the farm training sheep for sale and preparing for breeding.

I also plan to cut a few acres of second-cut silage in the next few weeks.
