Irish retailers lose from the fact that here, more consumers buy online from suppliers abroad than at home.

According to a new study from PayPal, the 2.1 million of us bought goods online from an Irish retailer in the last year, compared with 2.2 million people buying from a foreign site.

The results of the global cross border trade report to show Irish online shoppers more likely to buy from abroad than any of the other 29 countries surveyed markets.

Overall, 84pc of us chose to shop on foreign websites, spending €2.7 billion in the last 12 months. Three import markets – the UK, USA and China – are the most popular Irish online shoppers as the payment of delivery (34pc) and shipping costs (21pc) kept them from homebrew shops.

PayPal’s Louise Phelan said the study also shows Irish businesses, there is still so much to play for. Total online spend grows about 20pc year-on-year in Ireland, the report said.

“In just two years, e-Commerce will cost more than €10 billion in Ireland. Irish businesses have a huge opportunity before them to attract more customers and increase your online sales,” said Ms. Phelan.

Almost two thirds (65pc) of those surveyed for the report have made purchase using mobile devices such as smartphone or tablet in the past year, assessing the 61pc growth in mobile spending in Ireland to 2018 to €2.8 billion.

“It’s to put yourself in your customer’s shoes and understand how to turn browsers into buyers”, – says Ms. Phelan.

“For example, the number of Irish consumers to make purchases on your mobile is growing with such phenomenal speed that having a mobile website is no longer optional – it is absolutely vital to the future of any business.”
