Bill farmer feed increased by 10 000 euros per month compared to the same period last year due to the drought.

Peter Hynes called on the industry to campaign for higher milk prices to help farmers to overcome financial difficulties.

A farmer in Aherla, Co cork, said all agricultural organizations need to “unite” campaign for the increased price of milk, if dairy farmers had to go through a crisis.

He said, “feed my account is €10,000 per month more than this time last year, and here’s a tune I have to carry.

“Banks are going to help me and cooperatives are going to give gave me a loan, but at the end of the day I have to pay.

“Farmers have money, and be responsible for it. If you look at the prices on grain, straw and vegetables, they’re obviously going to go up because of increasing costs and shortages in the industry. I think cooperatives and three major farmers ‘organisations should get together and discuss a scenario where the price of milk and dairy products and meat were sold in Ireland increased by retailers and increase is passed directly to the farmer”.

Mr. Hines said that if the price of milk increased by 2C/l, it would have saved him €16,000 a year, and he feels that consumers would be more than happy to pay extra if they knew that he would go directly to the farmer.

He also called on chief of farmers ‘ organizations to hold a summit to address where will the farmers source of feed.
