The government intends to announce the winner of a National plan for broadband (NBP) on September 16, the Sunday independent understands.

The government insists that the suffering of the project, which has pledged to roll out high speed broadband to 540,000 rural homes and businesses, still, despite the recent departure of the electric utilities giant SSE from the shortlist of the tender, the consortium led by ENET.

Last week the Minister for business, enterprise and innovation, Heather Humphreys said that the contract with ENET, can be applied in September.

“Sunday independent” it became known that the announcement is scheduled for September 16.

This may allow construction work to begin on the network in the beginning of next year, with the majority of the rollout completed by the end of 2021.

Sources close to the process say that the departure of GSP has not had a freezing effect on plans to build ENET as a criticism. They say it is unlikely the government should consider a return to the drawing Board or significant delay in production.

It is also clear that imagine company controlled by veteran telecoms entrepreneur Sean Bolger, intends to return to the process of National broadband plan. The company, which was removed from the budget content at an early stage is considered to be pitching Wireless technology as a solution for connecting more isolated rural homes.

The government stated that “the vast majority” of the home network 540,000 will be based on running fibre directly to rural areas. However, he acknowledged that a minority living room may be too difficult or expensive to physically connect, wireless high-speed service taking the place of the digester and bleaching plant. Imagine has invested heavily in the technology of broadband wireless communication, purchasing special 5g-friendly mobile broadband spectrum in the 2017 auction for the bandwidth ComReg.

The ENET consortium, which also includes specialist investor John Laing must submit final details of its proposal before the end of the month. The price is expected to be about 1 billion euros.
