UK farmers urged the government to make food security a priority on the day the cabinets will run naked if households relied only on British products.

The long-term decline in self-sufficiency, which in recent years has stalled at around 60 percent is approximately three-fourths of the shortage of imports from the rest of the European Union.

Farmers have also been “bickering” with the effects of the summer heat, which led to the problems of food production in “sharp focus”, the national farmers ‘ Union (NFU) has warned.

The President Minette batters said: “It was a real test for the government to show farmers and many interested members of the public what they think, that our ability to produce food in this country is really important.

“We firmly believe that every British citizen should have the right to safety, traceability and quality supply of British food, which produce some of the highest animal and environmental standards in the world.

“Homegrown food production must have continued support of the Government, if we want to achieve this post-the British exit from the EU.”

Prime Minister Theresa may insisted last month that the public needs to take “confidence and comfort” from the government in the preparation of no-Internet, a quarter or a month after Ministers suggested food and medical supplies are stockpiled in case of a deficit.

In the NFU highlighted figures from the Department for environment, food and agriculture, which show the self-sufficiency levels hovered at around 60% for most of the past two decades, compared with 75% in the late 1980s and early 1990-ies.
