New post-the British exit from EU-delivery route will see Ireland is connected to Europe via the Netherlands and Belgium in the framework of the EU plans.

The European Commission adopted a proposal that will see the Dublin and cork ports associated with Zeebrugge and Antwerp in Belgium and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, but does not include the French ports.

The restructuring of the EU strategic transport corridor North sea-Mediterranean route, is part of the measures in Europe ‘readiness leaving the UK’.

The route was rebuilt as part of the effort to enable Irish trade with the intent to evade UK customs checks after leaving the UK and finding alternatives to land bridge over Britain.

The fin Gal MEP Brian Hayes said he suspects the proposal will be radically changed after further discussion.

“If we’re trying to make the product to the market, there must be equality between the French side and Belgian/Dutch side in terms of port access, as you can damage some of the Irish exports – export via the French route in southern Spain – we have to remember about it,” he said.

Aidan Flynn of the Association of freight transport welcomes the adoption of the proposal. “From our prospective, or strategic thinking about the future decisions and ease of access will be very happy,” he said.

Ireland is the largest EU market lies to the West of the continent, and communication thus very important, he said, adding that the plans should be adopted for combating dependence on great Britain land-bridge in the case of no-Internet or hard British exit from the EU.

Press Secretary of the European Commission stated that “based on their choice of ports on the existing traffic flows” after analysis.

“According to this, there are regular flights from Dublin and cork to Rotterdam and Antwerp. In addition, there are regular flights between Dublin and Zeebrugge. There is no such regular service in the major French ports of Calais and Dunkirk,” said he.

The main direct link to France also can be established by post-quarter month. Public consultation on the proposal will continue until September 26.
